Sawa-i-Lau caves

Sawa-i-Lau Limestone Caves: A Must-Do in the Northern Yasawas Often called the “heart of the Yasawas”, the sacred Sawa-i-Lau caves are a must-do while you’re in the Yasawa Islands. Step inside a towering limestone cavern where sunlight pours through an opening in the ceiling onto glowing turquoise water. For the adventurous, swim through an underwater passage into a hidden inner chamber. The caves are as rich in story as they are in beauty. Legend tells of a young chief who hid his betrothed here after her family promised her to a rival, swimming into the grotto each day with food until the two escaped to be together. The caves are also said to be the resting place of Ulutini, the ancient ten-headed Fijian god, with each chamber representing one of his heads. The caves are owned by local landowners, and it is by their invitation that we visit, so you experience the place with respect for its culture and traditions. Afterwards, browse the craft market hosted by the ladies of the village, where you can pick up handmade keepsakes.
